ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is inspired by nature and it's impact on our psyches. The origins of the work reside where intuition, sensibility, and imagination unify into geometric form.

Using the circle as a starting point sets parameters. I begin with specific geometric radiations, then synchronize the geometric form with semi-precious minerals, stones, Italian glass smalti and precious metals that resonate to me. These elemental ingredients create an alchemical experience reflecting on the landscape of wholeness.

When people encounter the work, there's often an unconscious impulse to open their hands in front of the mandala, as if to intake and absorb it's radiating energy.

Collecting materials is an integral part of my process and determines how and when a piece will come into being. Scavenged or inherited materials are hand-cut with the traditional hammer and hardie tools, requiring a slow, reflective attention. Positioning the tesserae creates an environment that focuses my intention, deepening a connection to the material and it's expressive potential.
