Lillian will demonstrate how mosaics are made, using the hammer and hardie technique. Showing a display of many materials, books, drawings, and mosaic examples. Free to Museum PublicIn conjunction with the Dec. 9th OPENING of the traveling exhibit from Israel, and a RARE opportunity to see a massive 300 AD Roman mosaic pavement installed on the floor.

Add a new dimension to your experience of the lively Lod Mosaic - California mosaic artist and scholar Lillian Sizemore will explore many aspects of this unique Roman pavement in her lecture “LOD 2.0 Above and Below” Lillian’s presentation takes the audience on a fascinating journey, explaining the mosaic’s symbolism and construction and introducing her revolutionary research that the flat pavement offers more than what meets the eye. This event on mosaics is inspired by the recent exhibit, Marvelous Menagerie: A Roman Mosaic from Lod, Israel, at the Legion of Honor.

EXPLORING THE LOD MOSAIC: PAST & PRESENT APRIL 23, Saturday 2:30 - 3:30 PM in the Florence Gould Theatre

Sizemore’s lecture reveals the methods and designs used to create the Lod mosaic. She introduces the ancient methods used to transfer the underlying design and how the pavements were built. Her research shows how the Lod mosaic reveals more than what meets the eye, and how ancient patterning still informs our thinking today.

Sizemore repeats her artist demonstration at noon on May 14, June 12 and July 9.

The Getty Villa in Malibu is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria.

Lillian will demonstrate her mosaic work, including a display of various techniques to illustrate how contemporary work embodies and reflects the ancient roots or “grammar” of mosaic making. Examples of work in progress, preparatory drawings, tools, materials, video, and resources will be featured. Visitors may try their hand at setting mosaics inspired by the Getty’s permanent collection. Demos last about an hour.

Lillian’s tour will elaborate on The Villa’s wonderful permanent collection of ancient Roman works from an artist/maker’s point of view. She will discuss the construction techniques used in the ancient works, and the fabulous mosaic and terrazzo floors throughout the Villa environment, bringing the museum experience to life.
